Important dates and term of chapter- Nationalism in Europe (History-ch1)

 


"IMPORTANT TERMS"

1. Nation state- 

A state that establishes itself as a separate political and geographical entity and functions as a complete and sovereign territorial unit. This concept emerged in 19th century. Europe as a result of the growth of nationalism.


2. Modern state-

A state in which soveregnity is exercised by a centralised power over a specific territory and population.


3. Absolutist Government

A system of government wherein limitless powers is vested in a single person or body. It is a monarchial form of government in which the ruler is the absolute authority and is not answerable to anybody.

4. Nationalism-

A feeling of oneness with the society or the state, love and devotion for the motherland and belief in the Political identity of one's country are the basic attributes of nationalism.

5. Utopian

a vision of a society that is ideal that it is unlikely to actually exist ( imagination world).

6. Conservatism-

a political philosophy that stressed the importance of traditions established institutions and customs and preferred gradual development to quick change.

⁷.Ideology-

 system of ideas reflecting a particular social and political vision.

8. Ethnic-

Relates to a common racial tribal or cultural origin or background that a community identifies with or claims.

1797- Napoleon invades Italy napoleonic wars begin.

1814 1815 fall of Napoleon the Vienna peace settlement.

1921 Greek struggle for independence begins.

1948 revolution in Europe Artisans industrial workers and peasants revolt against economic hardship middle classes demand constitutions and representative governments Italian German poles  etc demanded nation States.

1859 1870 unification of Italy.

1866 1871 unification of Germany.
